Oh, Ruth Chew’un kitaplarını çocukken nasıl yuttum! Çok büyüleyiciydiler. Sihirli bir ağaç iki çocuğu uzak dünyalara götürür.
This is a beautifully written book set during the depression. Jacob's parents are killed just as he is about to graduate with a degree in veterinary science. He loses everything he thought his future would be and inadvertently joins the circus. Gruen did extensive research on circus life and it shows. The book gives you a great sense of place. You can feel the dirt, hard work, smell of the animals, cruelty of the owner and manager, oddity of the freaks and loyalty of both men and animals. In addition, there's a compelling storyline that has you rooting not only for Jacob but also for the elephant. I'm not a lover of non-fiction books. I normally find them boring. I felt that this book, while fiction, had a large element of history in it's description of the depression and life in the circus. It was the best of both worlds.
